Snakes and ladders in an Indian context holds tremendous historical and cultural value. This seemingly simple children’s game of luck is actually deeply symbolic. The game was a 13th Century invention of the Marathi saint Dnyaneshwar, created to inculcate the idea of virtues and vices in children!
The metaphorical intent of the game was to reach “100” or “salvation” and an expression of virtues expedited the process while your vices took you back and allowed you to retake the same journey.
Whether you play this game with a young child without this metaphor in mind or you superimpose the idea of existence while playing the game, there is no way that snakes and ladders will not engage and entertain.
This particular piece is very special to CSA as it has been very thoughtfully put together by our various teams. The main board made of denim and markin fabric has been put together with a lot of care by our stitching team. However, it is the meticulous hand embroidery that really makes this product most unique.
Additionally, you can enjoy snakes and ladders but the back of the game has also been embroidered to accommodate a casual game of tic tac toe.
The crocheted counters in the game, 4 different coloured pieces for snakes and ladders and 10 pieces (two colour sets) for tic tac toe have been added and put in a small drawstring pouch or potli.
The game is foldable and packed in a lightly embroidered fabric drawstring pouch making it an ideal travel buddy.
